At the age of seventeen, I sat in a doctor’s office to hear my diagnosis. The relief of knowing what was wrong with me, being able to give it a name, was short lived when he informed me, “You are seventeen and your life is over.” This remark was followed by a long list of things I should give up on, including “pipe-dreams” of further education or ever living independently. There was no hope of healing, no treatment and no cure. While this hit me like a punch in the gut, I remember thinking in that very moment, “What right does he have to decide that my life is over? Nobody gets to decide that but me.” That began my journey into alternative therapies. Changing my diet and how I managed my life, so that I could continue to live it! Living with chronic illness isn’t easy and comes with a great many additional challenges that those blessed with good health don’t usually have to worry about. In addition to my physical diagnosis of Fibromyalgia, my mental health also suffered and that is when I found aromatherapy. These are the first gemstone lava bead bracelets I created It began when a friend recommended Bergamot Essential Oil to help with my depression and anxiety. I began with a cheap bottle which I used in an oil burner to diffuse around the room. I began to feel much calmer. Placebo? Maybe, I was a little sceptical, but if the placebo worked, I was going to enjoy the relief I got from it…. Over time, I became utterly convinced that this is not a placebo. I began collecting essential oils and learning about how they could be used to support my mood. The effects were incredible and essential to me since I prefer natural remedies and tend to react badly to most medications anyway. Did you know that the word “essential” used to describe these oils is actually referring to their essence? They are called essential because they contain the essence, mainly the fragrance, of the plants they come from. Yet for me, they became essential to supporting my health and wellbeing. Some time later, when I was suffering with allergies, a friend recommended ingesting Peppermint Essential Oil. Most brands of essential oils are not for internal use, so it became necessary for me to find a brand that produced pure enough oils that were safe to ingest; that’s when I found dōTERRA. From here, a whole new world of aromatherapy opened up. I began to learn about how essential oils could be used to support my physical health; even reducing my pain. As someone with a chronic pain disorder and allergies to most pain-killers, this was a game changer! I learned more specifically about dōTERRA oils as well. The way they are produced ensures that they are pure and potent, providing the maximum health benefits that essential oils can offer. Of course, money is always an obstacle for those of us battling with chronic health, but given the potency of their effects I felt they were worth the investment. Thankfully, only a small amount is needed at a time, so little by little I have been building up my essential oil collection. I am passionate about these oils and their capacity to help others. That is why I signed up to be a dōTERRA wellness advocate, to help others find the benefits these oils can have for them. Additionally, this became the inspiration behind the lava bead bracelets that I am setting up to sell here at Fairy Cove Curiosities. There are many ways to use essential oils, but it can be difficult sometimes to find practical and effective ways to use them in your daily life. Room diffusers are great, but you can hardly take them with you everywhere you go. A friend recommended putting a drop on my clothes, with the added warning it will stain – definitely not ideal. Rollerballs are a fab option, but the scent is sometimes short lived and it can be a fiddle constantly having to reapply it; not to mention it may look unprofessional stopping during a meeting to reapply. This is when I came across the concept of lava stone. Lava stone is made from cooled molten rock, it is very light and porous. A couple of drops of essential oil will absorb into these rocks, which will then work as a natural diffuser. I decided to put some lava stone beads on bracelets for convenient use diffusers that can be worn anywhere. Much to my delight, they worked even better than I could have imagined. Unlike the rollerball blends, I didn’t need to keep reapplying oils through the day. On average, I find that I get a good fragrance for at least two days, sometimes even longer. When I stop noticing the fragrance as much or feel I’m not getting the effects, I add another drop of oil to top it up. Just a couple of drops are needed on a bracelet. I combined the lava beads with other pretty beads to make beautiful and stylish bracelets, so that you are sure to find something for any occasion. I began with glass crackle beads which are bright and colourful, they are a fun and affordable option. I then began using gemstones, which I adore, to create a variety of styles. Gemstone bracelets are individually priced depending on what stones have been used. These bracelets are more than just a pretty accessory and a great talking piece; they are an easy way to adopt aromatherapy into your every day life. Once you’ve discovered the health and wellbeing benefits of aromatherapy, these bracelets will become so much more than beautiful accessories.
